Two exciting opportunities exist to join the University’s legal function, part of the Legal and Risk Branch within the Division of University Operations in the role of Legal Counsel – Research and Commercialisation and Legal Counsel – University Operations. The Branch provides services and advice across a range of disciplines including legal, risk, compliance, insurance, contracts, governance, internal audit liaison and co-ordination, copyright, trusts and bequests.

Legal Counsel – Research and Commercialisation

Reporting to the Manager, Legal Services – Research and Commercialisation but working under broad direction, the role of Legal Counsel – Research and Commercialisation is responsible for providing legal services for the Divisions of Research and Innovation on research related matters to the University including in particular to:

  • Innovation and Commercialisation Services
  • Research Services
  • The University’s controlled entities
  •  The Adelaide Graduate Research School.

The successful candidate will demonstrate post qualification experience handling complex commercial matters under minimal supervision and possess an excellent understanding of commercial law and intellectual property issues as well as experience in the design and review of commercial contracts.

Legal Counsel – University Operations

Reporting to the Manager, Legal Services – University Operations but also working under broad direction, the role of Legal Counsel – University Operations is to provide independent legal advice to the University on matters affecting the University or its controlled entities with a focus on:

  • International engagements
  • Teaching and learning agreements and Work integrated learning arrangements
  • Information Law
  • Regulatory Compliance
  • Policy review and development

The successful candidate will demonstrate sound post admission experience in a law firm or in-house legal role as well as experience in commercial law including drafting and advising on contracts and agreements (also with foreign parties), corporate governance, administrative law, information law and IT law.

Successful candidates for both roles will demonstrate high level negotiation, engagement and dispute handling skills, high attention to detail and responsiveness and an ability to work effectively within a complex and changing environment.

An understanding of the Higher Education sector and University environment would also be advantageous.

Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) are essential as is an ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters.

A Degree in Law and a current unrestricted South Australian Practising Certificate (or ability to acquire same upon commencement) is required.
