About the role

QLS has a part-time (3 days per week) opportunity for a Senior Policy Solicitor to join their Legal Policy team for a 12 month fixed-term contract. The Legal Policy team progresses the Queensland Law Society mission to advocate for good law for the public good.

The Legal Policy team supports key stakeholder relationships and the Society’s policy committees to represent the legal profession’s perspective on law reform issues affecting the Queensland legal profession and the community.

This role works directly with the Society’s specialist legal policy committees to identify, research, advocate and educate on law reform issues of relevance to the Queensland legal profession and the community. In this role you will;

  • collaborate with and coordinate the Society’s policy committees
  • conduct legal research for the purposes of briefing policy committees on the background and key issues attending advocacy matters.
  • draft complex and often technical submissions to Government and other entities
  • advocate to government and other stakeholders on current law reform issues
  • develop education and guidance materials for the legal profession on recent developments in the law.

About you

Ideally you will have the following:

  • 7 + years post admission legal practice experience with a sound level of legal knowledge (both breadth and depth) across a range of legal specialities.
  • Strong critical and strategic legal analysis and research skills with demonstrated ability to produce practical solutions to complex legal reform issues.
  • High level written communication skills with an ability to make logical legal arguments and determine the appropriate style of communication depending on the audience and objective.
  • High level oral and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to persuade key stakeholders about issues of legal reform.
