The Role

We are seeking a lawyer with three to six years of experience (Associate level) in intellectual property litigation with exposure to patent litigation to join our firm.

The position would be ideally suited to a lawyer who enjoys high caliber IP litigation in the patent area and is looking to work with “blue chip” clients and more hands-on responsibility for matters.

The key responsibilities for this role include:

• Management of your workflow including arranging for review and supervision of your work by the Principals of Spruson & Ferguson Lawyers, such work including:
• Drafting legal advice on all IP matters;
• Preparing and drafting evidence for all IP litigation and opposition matters;
• Drafting or responding to letters of demand in relation to IP matters;
• Drafting or assisting with drafting of statements of claim, other court documents and IP Australia opposition documents;
• Conducting research on points of law;
• Liaising with clients;
• Conducting due diligence; and other legal work as required.
• Management of your work quality and ensuring appropriate quality control of work undertaken by you;
• Management of your work timeliness and ensuring appropriate timing of work undertaken by you;
• Management of your day-to-day activities and interacting with relevant professional and support staff members to achieve both your and Spruson & Ferguson Lawyers’ short and long-term plans;
• Management of administrative functions, including recording of work-in-progress (WIP), management of potential and actual conflicts of interest, and management of professional standard obligations;
• Coordinating and communicating with other Principals and practice groups, and corporate group members (as appropriate);
• Participation, as requested, in marketing activities including undertaking marketing visits to clients, professional organisations and attending relevant events;
• Participation, as requested, in appropriate professional organisations and other representative industry bodies to promote Spruson & Ferguson or Spruson & Ferguson Lawyers; and such other responsibilities as directed by Spruson & Ferguson Lawyers from time to time commensurate with your role as a junior professional employee of Spruson & Ferguson Lawyers.

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this role, applicants will have the following skills and experience:

• Three or more years’ experience in IP Litigation;
• Excellent technical skills with a strong client focus;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail
• The ability to work under pressure;
• A positive approach with a can-do attitude; and
• The ability to work autonomously and within a team.
