The Role

As part of a dynamic in-house commercial legal team, this role reports direct to the General Counsel and is responsible for implementing and managing the Company’s dispute management strategy, managing and resolving significant disputes, and co-ordinating high-quality legal advice for all aspects of arbitration, mediation and litigation across the group.

Working closely with senior executives, external stakeholders, internal lawyers and managing external lawyers, this newly created role will be a key member of the in-house legal team. You will provide proactive, commercially focused legal advice, advise the General Counsel and have exposure to the Executive and at times the Board, and manage outsourced lawyers, including taking the lead on significant and reputational matters.

In addition, you will:

  • Manage the Company’s dispute management strategy
  • Design and implement systems for disputes handling
  • Be involved in regulatory issues which might give rise to disputes
  • Assess and implement strategies around corporate conduct and associated risks
  • Ensure policies on document retention meet compliance with legal obligations
  • Put in place appropriate external teams to deal with potential disputes
  • Work closely with business units to resolve litigation

About you

To be considered for this role you will be a commercially focussed and astute lawyer, with 8 or significantly more years of commercial litigation experience. You will possess an interest and experience in complex disputes and arbitrations and will have worked on disputes involving industries such as oil, gas and petroleum, resources and mining, or projects/construction. 

In addition to your honed legal skills, you will enjoy dealing with senior executives and being part of a close knit and engaging in-house team. You will demonstrate a dynamic and adaptable approach to meet ever changing business demands, and while you will rapidly identify legal issues, you will skilfully distil your advice into simple terms to allow you to communicate effectively within the broader business.
