The Role

As part of a dynamic in-house commercial legal team, this role reports direct to the Deputy General Counsel and is responsible for working independently to develop, recommend and deliver environmental law solutions aligned to the company’s strategy. It covers the global business, including on-shore and off-shore operations.

Working closely with senior executives, external stakeholders, internal and external lawyers, this newly created role will be a key member of the in-house legal team. The successful lawyer joins at a time of transition for the company and industry as a whole.  You will provide proactive, commercially focused legal advice, as you:

  • Work independently to develop and deliver environmental law strategies
  • Collaborate with the legal, environment and de-commissioning teams and wider business
  • Provide expert advice during incident responses
  • Mitigate risk to the business
  • Advise on environmental approvals across key projects
  • Provide expert advice in environmental disputes
  • Participate in de-commissioning risk mitigation and planning
  • Advise on legal implications of carbon capture and storage solutions
  • Manage external lawyers and spend

About you

To be considered for this role you will be a commercially focussed and astute lawyer, with 7+ years of environmental law experience gained in a quality in-house team or leading firm. You will have advised industries such as oil, gas and petroleum, resources and mining, or projects/construction. 

In addition to your honed legal skills, you will enjoy dealing with senior executives and being part of a close knit and engaging in-house team. You will demonstrate a dynamic and adaptable approach to meet ever changing business demands, and while you will rapidly identify legal issues, you will skilfully distil your advice into simple terms to allow you to communicate effectively within the broader business.
