Job description

We have opportunities for experienced leaders to join our Legal Services Division. As General Counsel you will lead a team providing strategic legal advice and assistance to the Minister, the Chief Executive Officer and the Executive.

Services Australia has a large and dynamic Commonwealth legal practice managing one of the Commonwealth’s largest litigation practices, advising on cutting edge administrative law issues, emerging information law issues and a range of complex corporate and employment law issues. Areas that you may be involved with include:

•         Complex administrative law issues relating to social security, child support and health programmes.

•         Litigation, particularly social security, child support and health programme reviews before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT), and related appeals from the AAT.

•         Privacy and information law, including:

o    assessing new agency projects, programmes, systems and initiatives which involve the management of personal information for compliance with privacy and secrecy obligations, including undertaking privacy impact assessments; and

o    managing the Freedom of Information function of the agency including external review by the FOI Commissioner and the AAT.

•         Employment law matters, including advice and advocacy on employment law, industrial relation and work health and safety.

•         Complex commercial and ICT acquisition and licensing.

•         Complex procurement, contracting intellectual property, and commercial and property matters.

Successful candidates will be outstanding leaders with excellent interpersonal skills and sound judgment. They‘ll have a strong customer and business focus and the ability to engender respect and trust.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Laws degree or equivalent
  • Admission as a legal practitioner in an Australian court
  • Eligibility to hold an unrestricted practising certificate

These roles may be filled on an ongoing or non-ongoing (fixed term) appointment.

A merit pool may be established to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing General Counsel vacancies should they become available within 18 months from the date advertised.

The position/s are located in Canberra.

  • The Senior Executive Band 1 level offers an attractive remuneration package, including 15.4% superannuation and salary packaging options.
